The UK government is funding green shipping research by backing a £6 million program to test energy saving technologies that could cut fuel consumption and emissions from ships.

“The UK is home to a wealth of expertise in maritime technology, but more needs to be done to move this sector towards a zero emissions world,” Maritime Minister John Hayes said in a statement.

Industry trials of new energy-saving technologies, for example high-tech propellers, on-board waste heat recovery systems and rotor sails to harness wind power to propel ships, will hopefully contribute to reducing the fuel use by vessels.

International treaties mandate the shipping sector to improve the energy efficiency of vessels by 30 per cent by 2025.
