Vertical farming on the rise; Netherlands to get Europe’s first commercial vertical farm

Erected at over a 900 square meter with a total cultivation are of 3000 square meters, Europe’s first commercial vertical farm is under construction in the Netherlands. The facility is based in the town of Dronten, and the crop is grown using the Philips GreenPower LED horticulture lightning technology in partnership with Rijk Zwaan. The farm is scheduled to be online in the second half of 2017. Aerofarms, New Jersey are also currently planning on building the world’s largest vertical farm with harvests upto 2 millions pounds a year. The demand for oragnic, pesticide-free and fresh food can be considered as the driving force behind this farming approach.
