Introducing a deposit return scheme would reduce litter and help tackle plastic pollution in the UK, which is necessary to prevent contamination of the natural environment. But poorer local authorities are hesitant because they think they will be losing money when people do not use their kerbside systems anymore.
Analysis of data across eight local authorities has now found that those authorities could save between £60,000 and £500,000 each as reduced littering and landfill charges will compensate for the lost revenue. This results in potential savings of £35m every year for the councils of England.
