The Marselisborg Wastewater Treatment Plant in Aarhus, a wasterwater plant in Denmark, generated 70 percent more energy than required to operate in 2016. By extracting carbon from wastewater and sludge, and then leading it into digesters with bacteria, the plant is making biogas which is burned to produce heat and electricity.
Engineers of the world are now looking to Aarhus to adopt the system that turns a problematic by-product into a valuable resource, and needed just $3.2 million in investment.
