WhatsApp may soon launch a peer-to-peer payment service in India

WhatsApp, with over 200 million users in India, may launch a peer-to-peer payment services soon in the country. WhatsApp plans to use the government backed cross bank payment system, UPI, to enable its users to begin payments within the next six months. A statement from WhatsApp said that, “India is an important country for WhatsApp, and we’re understanding how we can contribute more to the vision of Digital India. We’re exploring how we might work with companies that share this vision and continuing to listen closely to feedback from our users”. Sweden based, Truecaller in partnership with ICICI bank has also also started a similar service recently.
