Why infrastructure needs to become resilient

In the United States there is a consensus in both parties that the infrastructure of cities needs to be improved. A comprehensive approach is still missing though. Michael Berkositz, president of 100 Resilient Cities, said infrastructure improvements can only be achieved by integrating resilience in any new infrastructure project as well as legislation. Against the background of being exposed to hurricanes and other natural disasters which are climate change related, resilience is crucial for improving urban infrastructure. According to Berkositz resilience is about making sure to get the most out of every dollar spent and solving multiple problems at once. He further stresses that governments need to change the design and management of urban infrastructures, leverage existing funding and use financing mechanisms as well as public-private partnership models.
