The giraffe is the tallest animal on earth and can cover great distances. Tracking giraffe populations and recording their wellbeing for the purpose of protection is therefore not easy. Computer-based pattern-recognition systems are processing photographs of the unique spot patterns of giraffes and thereby help to evaluate the tracking data. Regular computers however have their limits and so the scientists are working developed a cloud computing platform that supports their operations.
