Will a bio-toilet alleviate India’s environmental crisis?

Not only Indian Railways, but also the government are installing a new type of bio-toilet in slums that run without water. As many urban dwellers in India do not have adequate sanitary infrastructure, the cost-efficient and environmentally-friendly bio-toilet could make a major difference. It is sustainable in the way that it reduces contamination of water and soil. Secondly, it can be used to generate energy from the gas that results from the decomposition of human waste in vacuum. In order to adopt bio-toilets people might have to change their relation to waste. Therefore the government strives to create more awareness for the environment and public acceptance by spreading information and providing financial support.
