In an effort to save up to 40,000 truck journeys a year, Yara and Kongsberg maritime have partnered to build the world’s first autonomous container feeder ship. This feeder ship will replace the trucks which carry shipping containers from different ports and transports them to central container terminals to be further loaded onto larger ships or onto rail. This autonomous ship will be called YARA Birkeland and the operation is expected to start in the second half of 2018, shipping the products from YARA’s Porsgrunn production plant to Brevik and Larvik in Norway. The ship will operate as a manned vessel before being moved to remote operation by 2019 and then to fully autonomous operations by 2020.
