On Sunday China’s meteorological authorities declared a yellow alert for smog that is expected to hang heavy in large areas of the country. China has a four-tier warning system, red is the most serious, followed by orange, yellow and blue. Smog alerts have become common in the winter season in North China due to cold weather conditions and increased burning of coal for heating.
