2020 Tokyo Olympics prepare for driverless cars

The organizers of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics plan to offer a self-driving taxi service for the visitors and competitors of the event. “Japanese robotics maker ZMP Inc has partnered with a taxi operator in Tokyo, as part of its plans to launch a self-driving taxi in the city in time for the 2020 Olympics,” Reuters reveals.

That taxi operator is Hinomaru Kotsu. Because of labor shortages even after hiring from abroad, the company now plans to use autonomous driving technology to supply enough taxis for the amount of people an event like the Olympics is sure to attract.

ZMP is developing automated driving hardware and software based on laser and stereo cameras.
