Bike theft is a major problem in the San Francisco Bay Area BART stations. In a pilot project, a new system by Bikeep is now tested that consists of tough, built-in locking mechanisms, an alarm that goes off if someone is trying to steal the bike, and the ability to alert authorities and make security cameras take pictures.

“I’ve been keeping my eye out for new, high-security bike-parking options for several years. There are surprisingly few on the market. But this one caught my eye,” says Steve Beroldo, manager of access programs at BART.

With Bikeep racks, people just register for access and then use a Clipper transit card with which onley they can unlock the bike rack. Reportedly, no bike has been stolen in a million locking sessions.
