Already in 2014, the US city of Cincinnati has started to exploit data in order to improve living conditions of its inhabitants. These efforts are now being extended to include real-time traffic management, air quality monitoring, and a gunshot detection system. Additionally, city-wide WiFi and broadband will be installed soon. Thereby city officials are taking into account some people’s limited access to the Internet and electric devices, showing that smart city efforts need to be socially integrative. An open data portal provides transparency over what kind of data is being collected by the city and encourages participation of and communication with citizens.
