Researchers at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York have managed to grow the type of stem cells that produce blood in their laboratory for the first time. With the help of a certain set of four proteins they might now be able to create blood for transfusions or treat patients with blood disorders using their own cells instead of marrow transplants.

At the same time, scientists at Harvard Medical School have developed a method to transform pluripotent cells into blood stem cells. Both teams are now advancing their tests to larger animals, and soon after, maybe humans.
