Bosch is about to make a big investment by announcing to build a $1.1 billion facility to produce semiconductors that can be used in self-driving cars, smart homes and smart city infrastructure. The new chip fab will be built in Dresden and should begin to commercially produce in 2021. This large-scale investment is done to ensure Bosch its key supply position in the future, as many automakers shift to focus on connected driving and mobility platforms. Bosch has been in the field of chip production for many years, yet other key players like Intel and Qualcomm are also attempting to position themselves as chip supplier in the autonomous market.
