A recent film by collaborators Plane-Site is shining a light on a pilot research program completed 2015 in Cartagena, Colombia. In cooperation with local residents through workshops where community representatives were shown design possibilities, Arup’s lighting team worked to light one troubled neighborhood in a way that strengthened its community links.
Offering a clearly local solution, the well-lit streets attract more people to stay longer, thus benefitting businesses’ earnings. Also, the opportunities for social encounters that bond a community are now more plentiful. This creates a combined sense of pride and security that results in people embracing their neighborhood.
