Thirty urban pilot projects in China are experimenting with ways to become more resilient against flooding, drought, pollution and heat waves. This is done by applying “natural tools” in order to increase the amount of water kept in the cities. The projects are therefore named sponge city effort. Compared to other methods were water is channeled out of cities, the aim in this case is to absorb, store, filter and purify rainwater to eventually retain it within the urban area. In that way water is easily accessible when needed.
