Researchers at Penn State College of Medicine have developed a new diagnostic tool that can determine whether somebody has a concussion, and also how long it will last.
“In this study of 52 children with concussions, we showed that epigenetic signaling molecules in saliva, called microRNAs, can potentially predict symptom duration with greater accuracy than standard concussion survey methods,” said Steven Hicks, an assistant professor of pediatrics.
The results are 85 percent accurate, predicting whether the symptoms will last longer than four weeks.
“Association of Salivary MicroRNA Changes With Prolonged Concussion Symptoms,” a paper detailing the contents of the research, was published in the journal JAMA Pediatrics.
