New research revealed that cyanobacteria and algae produce a group of compounds called mycosporine-like amino acids (MMA), which are basically UVR filters, and have shown excellent potential in laboratory tests to act as sunscreen.
This is especially relevant as the European Chemicals Agency has listed eight out of 16 most commonly used sunscreen products in Europe as potential threats to the environment, incentivizing the search for an alternative with an environmental impact not as questionable.
