Alphabet’s Verily fights Zika with more mosquitoes

Verily, the life sciences unit of Alphabet, is launching Debug Fresno, the first field study in the U.S to test a mosquito control method that utilizes the sterile insect technique. As part of the Debug project, the study’s goal is to reduce the global health impact of disease-carrying mosquitoes. Specifically, Debug Fresno will try to lower the population of mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus by releasing 20 million sterile male mosquitoes into two neighborhoods.

Male mosquitoes do not bite, and hope is that this study leads to a cost effective way to control and measure mosquito populations.
