The Volkswagen I.D., if the company is to be believed, will cost thousands less than the Tesla Model 3. Similar to their Volkswagen Golf in size, entry-level versions of the vehicle might be available for as little as $27,500, with the top versions coming in at around $34,500. The car that is said to come with a range between 250 and 370 miles is to be first released in the beginning of 2019.

“We get a vehicle with the exterior dimensions of the Golf … the abilities of a Tesla … at the price of a diesel,” Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess said. The pricing is possible due to the new MEB modular electric car platform, which reduces production costs for electric vehicles. Volkswagen has planned five different electric cars based on the MEB architecture between 2019 and 2022.

Volkswagen, in cooperation with BMW, Mercedes, and Ford, is also developing the European superfast charging network, with 400 superfast charging stations across Europe, providing up to 350 kW of charging power.
