Mumbai, were bicycling is on a decline, shows that the trend is not beneficial to the quality of life of its citizens. Experiences show that efforts to make city transport more bicycle-friendly pay dividends for pedestrian safety and the welfare of all citizens. WRI’s Amit Bhatt reveals that big infrastructure projects in India’s biggest city “are planned and commissioned without fully understanding the implication of the costs and benefits, let alone the value of inclusive pedestrian- and cyclist-friendly design”.

“As the modal share of bicycle increases, so does the quality of life of [a city’s] citizens,” Bhatt says. He suggests contacting officials and city administrators, or even just bringing up the issue with friends and family, so that the issue is carried out to the public.
