The city of Boston commissioned scientists and engineers to explore the feasibility of building a large sea barrier around Boston Harbor as the sea level rises. The scientists and engineers have received a huge grant to exercise in order to conduct their research. Ideas to protect coastal areas include building berms or diverting flood waters into canals or holding areas. Boston’s sea wall will not be dam, though. It needs to have openings large enough for ships to pass and gates that close before heavy storms. The barrier has two goals: it is supposed to hold back regular high tides and blunt the cresting waters during storms.
