California might ban combustion engines in near future

With China being the principle driver of the idea that internal combustion engines are a thing of the past, ardent climate change activist Governor Jerry Brown wants California to follow in China’s footsteps. The question that remains is how the transition is to be made.

One idea is to tax conventional cars in a way they are no longer profitable. “We certainly wouldn’t expect to get a waiver for [banning conventional cars] from EPA,” head of the California Air Resources Board Mary Nichols says. “I think we would be looking at using some of our other authorities to get to that result.” A simple ban would be the next step.
