Are renewable energy plants already cheaper than fossil ones? Image source: Shutterstock (#127435232)
Scottish Power has commissioned an analysis of wind energy pricing to persuade the UK government to rethink its stance on onshore windfarms. The report by leading engineering consultant Arup concluded that the windfarms would cost just as much as new gas power stations, or half as much as the Hinkley Point C nuclear plant that has been in the news recently.
While EDF’s contract for the Hinkley plant included prices of about £92.50 per MWh, windfarms were calculated to offer prices of £50-55 per MWh over 15 years. That is cheap enough to deliver turbines for a guaranteed price of power low enough that it would be subsidy-free in terms of the impact on household energy bills.
