When Mayor Rahm Emanuel launched the Chicago City of Learning online platform (CCOL) four years ago, it was to offer extracurricular activities to students. Now, researchers are benefitting from the data the platform provides, and see a mismatch between the things kids wanted to learn and the programs they could access because of the income level of their families.
Although hundreds of out-of-school programs are offered to the 86,000 users, until now, the most vulnerable kids were not getting the same opportunities for education. That is going to stop now, thanks to the collected data on inequity of education.
