The German Aerospace Center (DLR) has come up with an innovative concept for the next generation cargo transport by rail- NGT Cargo. The smart freight train will be made up of single wagons powered by very powerful end cars. High level of automation, intelligent handling and high speeds forms the core part of the concept. ” Freight transport is currently dominated by block trains that are not shunted and that use a large number of wagons to carry large, standard volumes of freight from point A to point B,” lead NGT project researcher Joachim Winter said. The individual wagons will be able to shunt autonomously using this concept and will help in reducing the overall operational costs and providing increased flexibility. The primary goals of the NGT project include reduction in travel and transport costs, energy saving and reducing noise emissions, increasing the passenger comfort while improving the overall travel safety and minimizing the lifecycle costs of the rolling stock.
