Spin, LimeBike, and Mobike are three seperate companies, but they are all intoducing private, dockless bike-share to Washington, D.C. In a trial run of their new privately operated bike sharing offers, they companies will commit 400 bikes each.

They see their project as a complement to the already successful Capital Bikeshare program. “Capital Bikeshare is an amazing system,” Spin CEO Derrick Ko says. “But I think there are just inherent limitations to station-based systems, and that’s where we’ve come in to fill in the gaps.”

The bikes use GPS-based tracking systems and QR codes, and can be unlocked and paid for with a smartphone. “We’re like the Uber and Lyft to their bus and subway system,” says Toby Sun, the CEO of LimeBike. “It’s on-demand, any time, any where. There’s flexibility and convenience.”
