Onyx Connect, a South Africa-based company, will produce affordable smartphones entirely in Africa. Up to now, manufacturing, logistics and supply networks relied on companies from China. With an own license from Google, Onyx Connect is allowed to integrate Android and Chrome software on its own manufacturing process. Low-cost smartphones in combination with subscription offers at an accessible price are key for the digital transition in African countries. So far Asian smartphone producers have been dominating the market for digital devices.
