Tails, a mobile phone application to record small-scale fish catches, was launched by the Cook Islands this month, adding the islands to a network of Pacific island countries that collect these data to manage fish resources.

Tails was developed by the New Caledonia-based Pacific Community, and allows fisheries officers to use mobile phones or tablets to gather data from small fishermen. Boat type, catch size and fish species and other vital information can be transmitted even without an internet connection.

The app was first piloted in Tokelau in 2016, and is now used by six Pacific countries to establish food security.
