Fuel cell companies unite to push automation research

Several major fuel cell firms (Intelligent Energy, Freudenberg Performance Materials SE&Co.KG, WMG at the University of Warwick, and Toyota Motor Europe) are backing a new three-year research initiative called DIGIMAN. The €3.5 million project is aimed at automating manufacturing processes for fuel cell stacks and lowering costs for fuel cell vehicles.

By applying digital and automated manufacturing techniques to fuel cell stack production lines, outdated manual processes should be replaced to reduce operational and supply chain costs. The companies are assuming that they can scale production capacity to meet the future requirements of more than 50,000 fuel cell stacks by 2020.
