German startup puts farms directly into supermarkets

Infarm, a Berlin-based startup, is bringing distributed farming into supermarkets with its modular vertical farming units. To reduce the carbon footprint of fresh foods, the startup places the units directy in grocery stores, eliminating the need for transport. All this works with a combination of hydroponic systems, LED-lighting, sensors, and hardware and software platform.

“Our autonomous, modular farming units can be stacked to meet any space or demand, whether that be a restaurant, supermarket or even in a warehouse. Each hydroponic farm is monitored and controlled through our robust central farming platform that can adjust the growing environment to ensure each plant gets the best conditions to thrive,” the company explains.

A few Infarm units are already in operation. The company partners with a Berlin METRO Cash & Carry location, German supermarket cooperation EDEKA, Berlin restaurant Good Bank, and more investors are coming in.
