Google has started an independent business that is not part of the Alphabet group. Dandelion, as it is called, was created to promote geothermal system technology, and its goal is to be for residential heating and cooling what SolarCity is to rooftop solar.

“For the past few years, my team and I have been on a mission to make it easier and more affordable to heat and cool homes with the clean, free, abundant, and renewable energy source right under our feet: geothermal energy,” says Dandelion CEO Kathy Hannun.

In the US, residences and commercial buildings account for 39% of all carbon emissions, and energy from the ground can provide lower and steadier monthly energy expenses. Dandelion has developed a drill that promises to be much less expensive than traditional geothermal systems, and make use of that energy.
