New technology takes over in departed driver scenarios

Mobis is doing research into new autonomous safety function that detects the critical situation where a driver departs from controlling their vehicle. The Departed Driver Rescue and Exit Maneuver (DDREM) technology will mitigates the risk of a crash by taking control of the car and leading it to safety. Activating when the driver falls asleep, suffers a heart attack or the results of other health conditions, the level 4 autonomous technology is set to prevent more than 90 percent of departed-driver crashes.

That number was derived from several independent studies, which conclude there are around 7,000 fatalities caused by departed driver scenarios in North American region each year. Simulations suggest DDREM could prevent more than 6,000 of those.
