Reports of rainstorms in the gulf area, including the city of New Orleans, have been hitting the news over the last decade and longer. A local nonprofit organization, Urban Conservancy, helps residents of New Orleans to prepare effectively against the floods by reducing paved surface. Through the nonprofit’s Front Yard Initiative, asphalted driveways are replaced by permeable, crushed-gravel walkways, native plants and trees that serve as a natural reservoir.
