Boeing is planning on purchasing Aurora Flight Sciences Corporation, a company known for the production of advanced automated drones and aerospace platforms. This is a confirmation that Boeing is truly stepping up its investment in autonomous technology, suggesting the company could incorporate artificial intelligence into the steering of its planes. Up to now, Boeing has focussed on AI in submarines and drone projects, but has yet to develop its autonomous commercial aviation technology. Which concrete role Aurora’s technology will play in Boeing’s new products is still unclear, as Greg Hyslop, chief technology officer and senior vice president of Boeing Engineering, Test & Technology announced last week.
