IBM’s lab-on-a-chip technology detects diseases before symptoms occur

Researchers at IBM Research are developing a lab-on-a-chip nanotechnology that seperates and isolates bioparticles down to 20 NM in diameter. This gives access to DNA, viruses and exosomes which could then be analysed in order to find out if there are any signs of disease before symptons have occured. Exosomes carry information from their initial cell, including proteins, RNA and DNA. Thus, they can provide information for central nervous system diseases such as Alzheimer, MS), renal fibrosis and cardiovascular disease. The lab-on-a-chip technology could be packed in handy devices so people could measure their own biomarkers. Then the information are send to a cloud and could be combined with health data from other IoT devices. Taking together all the information and data gives a detailed view of the health status and alerts when there are any illness related signs.
