IKEA expands sustainability efforts to food waste

IKEA announced that they are expanding their Food is Precious initiative to all its 400 stores in 48 markets yesterday. With IKEA’s sustainability efforts already in effect in many areas, cutting food waste across its stores by 50 percent by the end of 2020 is their next goal.

The company already conducted a trial in the UK during which smart scale-based technology was deployed to measure food waste and identify areas where savings can be made. After the success of the pilot, expansion is the next logical step.

IKEA also joined the Champions 12.3 coalition, which brings together businesses, governments, and NGOs working to deliver the UN’s Sustainable Development Goal on food waste.
