Ito World is launches commercial global bike-share data stream

The transportation data company Ito World just launched a data stream to make global bike-share data accessible. Developers and companies of apps can pay for the access and get real-time data from more than 1,000 bike-share systems in cities around the world. The aim is to help further incorporate bike-share into transportation apps and, more ambitiously, support bike-share as an option for multimodal trip planning. As to now, data on bike-shares has been rather confusing and unregulated. More recently however, American operators have been trying to standardize the data calling it General Bikeshare Feed Specification. This makes it easier for app developers to provide real-time data for many different systems and easier for researchers to analyze bike-share use and system performance city to city.

However, Ito World is able to trace data from 1,000 bike-share systems, and compresses it into one format. Ito World CEO Johan Herrlin says that if bike-sharing is better integrated into major transportation planning apps, it’s likelier that more people will consider bike-sharing as a viable transportation option.
