Kochi Metro in India has signed a power purchase agreement to receive a quarter of its total electric supply from solar power systems. All 22 stations of the project and the coach maintenance yard will have rooftop solar power systems installed, which will amount to a capacity of around four megawatts. At a rate of Rs 5.51/kWh, which is highly competitive for rooftop projects, the project will be at least partially operational in October this year.

Hero Power Private Limited will invest Rs 27 crore, and the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy also supported the project and financed 15 percent of expenses. With the switch to solar, Kochi Metro follows Delhi and Mumbai metro stations to become more sustainable.
