Tree canopies contribute to lowering urban temperatures by blocking shortwave radiation and increasing water evaporation, mitigate air pollution and their implementation has been put in the top ten of urban initiatives by  the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Global Agenda Council (GAC) on the Future of Cities back in 2015.

Treepedia has now developed the Green View Index (GVI), with which canopy covers can be compared and evaluated. Working together with the World Economic Forum’s Global Agenda Council on the Future of Cities and the World Economic Forum’s Global Shapers community, the organization wants to grow this database to measure how green cities are all over the world. The GVI uses Google Street View panoramas to analyze the amount of green perceived while walking down the street.
