Ride-sharing company Lyft will soon start a pilot project around San Francisco to evaluate how riders react to self-driving cars. Being the only company to operate self-driving technology in the Bay Area as Uber received a cease-and-desist from the state of California, Lyft is getting a headstart.
The cars will be provided by Drive.ai, a Mountain View-based startup that builds autonomous vehicle software, and each one will have a trained driver in case something goes wrong. Passengers have to opt into the program, but the rides themselves are free of charge.
