Aquaculture- the sustainable path to marine fishing? Image source: Shutterstock (#569384935)

As most of the world’s wild fisheries are fished at their maximum yield, aquaculture as the fastest growing food sector in the world, will have to step in soon with the growing population.

It is estimated in a study that marine aquaculture could produce as much seafood as all of the world’s wild marine fisheries while using less than 0.015 percent of the world’s oceans. Of course, it has to be sustainable, but then aquaculture can be an effiecient farming method with lesser environmental impacts than farming for beef, pork or chicken.

One promising approach is the siting of fish and shellfish farms more than one nautical mile offshore, which could significantly reduce pollution as water is deeper and currents faster.
