New report SmartStart (2016) has found that many UK cities are slowly transforming to smart cities with smaller smart projects to improve the efficiency of local services, enhance sustainability and develop their competitiveness to attract business and talent. Sustainability is the prime goal of initiatives like these, and funding is was identified to make most sense coming from the private sector.
The report estimates that up to €6.21 billion (US$6.9 billion) might be available in funding from the private sector in the U.K. for small-scale smart initiatives. London, pioneer for smart cities in the UK with its RE:NEW program and the goal to install smart gas and electricity meters in all homes until 2020 is setting standards. Smart controls can function as central nervous system for buildings and quickly generate savings that pay for the investment and more.
