Massachusetts might well be a trailblazer on carbon pricing. Image source: Shutterstock (#545633326) pictures the skyline of Boston.
The Campaign for a Clean Energy Future, a coalition of community groups, environmental organizations, business leaders, and faith communities in Massachusetts, has proposed two bills to put a price on carbon pollution to combat climate change. The Joint Committee on Telecommunications, Utilities, and Energy (TUE) is now holding a hearing on the pending bills today.
The bills propose to levy fees on fossil fuels once they cross state lines to encourage usage of clean, renewable energy. One of the driving forces behind the campaign is Boston-based Climate XChange, the organizer of the State Carbon Pricing Network. Should the bills pass today, this might mark the beginning of a shift in standards for other states as well.
