Melbourne initiatives deal with traffic and congestion issues

In the framework of the Resilient Melbourne Citysmart Challenge, several creative, feasible and impactful ideas to help to reduce transport congestion have surfaced to juggle day-to-day life for commuting parents and others plagued by traffic. “Given congestion seems to be getting to be a greater scourge, more people are spending time in their vehicles, but by themselves, maybe listening to the radio. They’re not connecting to their communities and their families,” says Melbourne councillor Cathy Oke.

Parachuute is a smartphone app that lets people leverage their social networks of trusted friends and fellow parents to exchange favors for transportation needs. Last Mile Solutions wants to create a consolidation centre on the edge of the CBD for delivery companies to drop off their parcels, so less trucks enter the city center and increase traffic. And Navya’s driverless electric shuttle buses are offering people transportation from their door to the nearest means of public transportation to save those extra minutes to be with their families.
