Method to harness wasted methane discovered

Scientists at MIT have found a way to use electricity to convert methane into a liquid that can be made into automotive fuel or used as a precursor to a variety of chemical products. Right now, 150 billion cubic metres of methane are wasted every year, which amounts to 400 million tons of carbon dioxide when burned.

The electricity used for the process could come from renewable sources as well. The research was published in the ACS Central Science journal. “This finding opens the doors for a new paradigm of methane conversion chemistry,” says Jillian Dempsey, an assistant professor of chemistry at the University of North Carolina, who is not part of the team.
