M&S drastically reduces plastic use in packaging

Major UK supermarket Marks & Spencer’s has cut the amount of food packaging for more than 140 best-selling products by reducing the amount of air in the bags. Project Thin Air, as it is dubbed, decreased plastic use by up to 37 percent for some products, most of them popular snacks like popcorn and potato chips.

These reductions amount to 75 tons less plastic every year, which is the equivalent of 152 less trucks on the road. “We’ve been working on this project for over a year and are really pleased with the results,” said M&S packaging expert Laura Fernandez. “We see this as the start of a much bigger piece of work and hope to bring equally impressive savings to other areas of the business too.”
