On October, 24th the “The World in 2050: Imagining and Creating Just Climate Futures” conference started. It will be lasting three weeks. What is special about it is that the whole world is invited but people do not come to the conference in person. The idea behind a nearly carbon-free conference without anyone coming in person is that the people do not have to fly which saves a huge amount of emissions. The whole conference is taking place on a website. Anyone can give a talk and attend or even participate in a wide open discussion about the talks. 50 speakers from eight countries are at the conference but not in person.
The conference is an idea of Ken Hiltner, professor of English and John Foran, professor of sociology and environmental studies, at the University of California in Santa Barbara.
