North America’s biggest city, Mexico City, has eliminated parking minimums. Experts around the world are calling for such a reform for years. It will help to limit the construction of new parking and instead support the development of the public transit system. Further it enables renters and home buyers who are not interested in parking facilities – only 30 percent of the city’s residents own cars – to save money. In many cities in North America it is common that residents without cars subsidize parking. Therefore it can be said that the new regulations are not just making the city more sustainable, but also fairer.
